Augustine on Creation Myth - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 487 Creation Myth/Augustine/Gadamer: [Augustine observes in his] dogmatic interpretation of the creation account(1), (...) that light is created before there is the discernment of things and the creation of the light-giving celestial bodies. In particular, however, he emphasizes that the initial creation of heaven and earth still takes place without the divine word. Light: It is not until the creation of light that God speaks for the first time. He interprets this speaking, through which the light is called and created, as the spiritual becoming of light, through which the difference of the formed things is made possible. Only through the light does the shapelessness of the first created mass of heaven and earth of design become capable of manifold forms. Gadamer: We recognize in Augustin's witty interpretation of "Genesis" a prelude to the speculative interpretation of language that we have developed in the structural analysis of the hermeneutical experience of the world, according to which the multiplicity of thought only emerges from the unity of the word.
